New Electronic Health Record & Online Patient Portal!

Mid Dakota Clinic is thrilled to announce that it has launched an Electronic Health Record (EHR). In conjunction with the EHR, a new practice management computer system was put into place that will enhance your clinic visit, maximize the efficiency of our business office and allow you to communicate with us easily and safely - according to your schedule!

We ask for your patience and understanding as this conversion requires new appointment scheduling phone numbers: local (701) 530-6001 / toll-free 1-855-530-6001, and a cross-over in billing statements. Patients with account balances prior to April 1, 2013 will receive two statements for a period of time - one from the old computer system for charges prior to April 1, and one from the new computer system for charges incurred April 2 and after.

One of the most exciting changes in our new operations is the addition of the Patient Portal on our website. Using your own secure password, you can log into the online patient portal 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the comfort and privacy of your home or office.

WITH OUR PATIENT PORTAL SERVICE YOU CAN:

•	View and request appointments
•	Request prescriptions and refills
•	Retrieve test results
•	View personal health information
•	Update demographic information
•	Browse health facts and information
•	View your billing statements and balance
•	Make secure credit card payments
•	Communicate with your doctor by sending and receiving secure messages

We offer the online patient portal to help you save time, avoid playing phone tag with your doctor, and stay educated about ways to keep your family healthy and safe.

You can register for the Patient Portal in our office or by clicking the My MDC Chart button on the top of the page.

Ask a staff member to learn more about the online patient portal or give us a call at (701) 530-5914, toll-free 1-800-472-2113.

The Mid Dakota Clinic Surgicenter has achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) through 2014. Accreditation distinguishes this surgical center from many other outpatient surgical facilities by providing the highest quality of care to its patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.

Ambulatory health care organizations seeking accreditation by the AAAHC undergo an extensive self-assessment and on-site survey by AAAHC expert surveyors - physicians, nurses, and administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory health care. The survey is consultative and educational, presenting best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.

More than 5,000 ambulatory health care organizations across the United States are accredited by AAAHC. Not all ambulatory health care organizations seek accreditation; not all undergoing the on-site survey are granted accreditation.

The MDC Surgicenter has been accredited by AAAHC since 2008.

Minimally Invasive Surgery Saved 91-year-old Woman

For a moment, Rose Rohr considered whether she would die.

On May 19, she was sitting in her burgundy recliner, looking outside, when she experienced gut-wrenching pain.

"I thought, ‘there goes my aneurysm,'" she said. "I could call 911 or let myself go. I knew if I did not do it now, I can't do it later."

She picked up the phone, dialed the number and then passed out. She was taken to the emergency room by ambulance. Her aorta, one of the major arteries in the body, had a weak section that had bulged out and burst open, leading to blood pooling in her abdomen.

"It was at least double the normal size," said Dr. Derek Kane, a surgeon with Mid Dakota Clinic, who was on call when Rohr was taken to the ER.

In emergency situations, ruptured aortic aneurysms are usually repaired by making an incision from the sternum to the pelvis, clamping the aorta and bypassing the aneurysm.

This type of surgery has a high risk of failure, and Rohr's age made it even riskier. She turned 91 in March. About half of the people who have a ruptured aneurysm die, and about half the people who have the surgery die during, or shortly after, surgery, Kane said.

Instead, Kane thought Rohr would be a good candidate for an endovascular aneurysm repair, which installs a stent-like device covered with fabric into the aorta that creates a tube to bypass the aneurysm.

Rohr could not make her own decisions. Her daughter, Madonna Busch, was called by a nurse in the emergency room. Busch and her family were on vacation in Los Angeles as part of an annual vacation to visit ballparks in every state. It was up to Busch to decide whether her mother should have the endovascular repair. Her mother did not want any extraordinary measures to save her life.

"You feel very helpless, very out of control," Busch said, about finding out what happened to her mother.

Busch, a nursing instructor, consulted with other family members about what to do. If they did nothing, she would die. She knew if her mother had the traditional surgery she would likely die, and there was a chance that her mother could die if they did the stent. They decided to go ahead with the stent, and if it didn't work, no more measures would be taken to save Rohr's life.

Kane sought out Dr. Brent Herbel, an interventional radiologist at St. Alexius Medical Center. Herbel was just about to leave for the day.

The procedure that Kane suggested is one that Herbel has done for elective surgeries, but not in an emergency situation. The procedure involves making a two- to three-inch slit in the groin and going up a vein in the leg to the aorta.

The device that was inserted in the aorta has a large hole on one end and two smaller tubes on the other end. One of the tubes detaches so that it can be inserted through the vein in the other leg. The large end attaches to the aorta and the smaller tubes go into the veins that supply each leg. Herbel inserts a needle and catheter into the vein in the other leg to connect the second small tube.

Rohr was in ICU for three days, and in the hospital for 12 days. Rohr doesn't remember much of her time in the hospital.

"The first thing she said is ‘I fooled you all. I made it,'" Busch said.

(Reach reporter Sara Kincaid at 250-8251 or sara.kincaid@bismarcktribune.com.)

The Essure procedure is a permanent birth control procedure that offers women protection from pregnancy without cutting, burning or the risks associated with anesthesia or tubal ligation. Soft, flexible micro-inserts are placed in the fallopian tubes, usually in just a few minutes. No incision is needed because these tiny inserts are delivered through the vagina and cervix.
KFYR TV Medical Report: Varicose Veins

Vein problems develop in all age groups and affect about 25 percent of women and 15 percent of men for a total of about 25-40 million people in the United States. Patients may experience leg fatigue or heaviness, burning and swelling with more serious conditions or simply have an unsightly appearance. The good news is that there is relief for the discomfort and appearance of most unsightly veins.

The Vein Center is a one-stop center for patients where they can receive everything they need from products like compression stockings and creams to venous ultrasounds, treatments and surgeries. The Vein Center is staffed by Vascular Surgeon and former varicose vein sufferer, Dr. Steven Hamar. The most common vein problems Dr. Hamar treats are varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, veins that are not transferring blood properly.

The first step for anyone wanting to treat vein problems is an evaluation which may include an ultrasound to determine the source of the problem. Some patients can be helped through non-surgical approaches such as wearing support hose, using prescribed creams and medications, and other topical approaches. Through the Vein Center, Dr. Hamar offers these conservative treatment options as well as surgical procedures that include sclerotherapy, endovenous closure, stripping and TRIVEX® for varicose veins.

View the KFYR TV report with medical reporter Juli McDonald, Dr. Steven Hamar and varicose vein patient, John Barnes (October 2010):
Part I
Part II

Mid Dakota Clinic Earns Second Consecutive ACR Accreditation

Mid Dakota Clinic has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) as a result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). CT scanning - sometimes called CAT scanning - is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and tailor treatments for various medical conditions. Mid Dakota Clinic is the only facility in western ND to earn this prestigious accreditation.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Bariatric Program Celebrates Landmark Procedure

St. Alexius Medical Center and Mid Dakota Clinic are proud to announce the completion of the 1,000th surgical weight-loss procedure through the Primecare Surgical Weight Loss Program. The program is only six years old, and the procedures are currently being performed by just two surgeons who also maintain general surgery practices.

"This is a big deal for us! We've been so successful because our low complication rate is similar to national rates," says Brandon Helbling, MD with Mid Dakota Clinic. "I credit our success rate to the comprehensive weight loss services we offer our patients. It's not just about having surgery. It's about knowing how to keep the weight off by making healthy food choices, living an active lifestyle and knowing where to turn for support."

Dr. Helbling joined the program nearly two years ago and is now the Medical Director. Dr. Gaylord Kavlie began the program in February of 2004 offering laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. Today, the two Mid Dakota surgeons perform three different laparoscopic weight-loss surgeries: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, and Adjustable Gastric Banding. The 1,000th surgery was a gastric bypass performed by Dr. Helbling.

Hope White Bear was surprised to learn that she was the 1,000th patient to undergo weight-loss surgery through the Primecare Surgical Weight Loss Program. "It's the best decision I've ever made with my health. It's been so good for my whole family. I have no regrets, " says White Bear.

"There's nothing better than when a patient begins to see results. They're enjoying life again and doing things they couldn't do before. That's because of the emotional, physical and medical improvements we've been able to help them make," says Dr. Helbling.

"I'm still in shock about it. The entire staff was able to answer all my questions and made me feel very comfortable both before and after the procedure," says White Bear.

St. Alexius and Mid Dakota Clinic have been designated as Blue Distinction Centers for weight loss surgery, offering a comprehensive program which includes medical, surgical, nutritional, physical and emotional support for optimum outcomes.

See the related KFYR-TV News Story.
