Excessive menstrual bleeding has several causes, including hormonal changes, uterine growths, infection or chronic illness. If drug therapy is not successful, surgical options are available.
• D&C, or dilation and curettage, scrapes away the top layer of the uterine lining in an outpatient surgery to reduce bleeding.
• Hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus, is performed to eliminate excessive bleeding or other problems. The types of hysterectomies performed include vaginal, abdominal, total laparoscopic and laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH).
• Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure that removes the uterine lining to reduce bleeding.
• Uterine balloon therapy is an outpatient treatment that destroys the uterine lining using a balloon and heated fluid.
